Asuu strike


Today, the federal government has constituted new committee to review the recommendations of the Emeritus Professor “Nimi Briggs” committee, the committee incharge of the renegotiation of the 2009 Agreement between the federal government and university unions).

According to The PUNCH report, the unions are: the Academic Staff Union of Universities, and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, among others.

The new 14-man committee contains some pro-chancellors, vice-chancellors and other university stakeholders.

The Spokesperson for the Ministry of Education, “Ben Goong”, who briefed journalists after the meeting said that the committee would be chaired by the Minister of Education, “Adamu Adamu”.

Mr. Adamu had on Tuesday launched the new 14-man committee to review the recommendations concerning the resolution of the lingering ASUU strike.

According to the Spokesperson for the Ministry of Education, Ben Goong, the members of the committee include Professor Olu Obafemi, Professor Nimi Briggs, Udo Udoma, Bashir Dalhatu, Professor Kayode Adebowale,(University of Ibadan) Professor Kabir Bala (Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria), Professor Lilian Salami (University of Benin), Professor Charles Igwe (University of Nigeria Nsukka), Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, Professor Ishaq Oloyede; Representatives of the Academy of letters, Science, Medicine and social sciences.

ASUU STRIKE: Strike Will Be Called Off Next Week — Education Minister

The Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu has said the prolonged strike by members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) would be called off next week.

Adamu made this assertion in Abuja while speaking with the Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFund.

The minister said the executive arm of the government had begun schemes to make sure the demands of the 2009 ASUU-FGN agreement are met.

Reacting to this, the Chairman of the Senate Committee, Jibrin Barau lauded the Minister of Education for his efforts in restoring peace between the federal government and ASUU and ensuring the industrial action is brought to an end.

Members of the ASUU commence their industrial action in February 2022 due to the inability of the federal government to meet their demands.
